What is Cupping?

Cupping Therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which special cups are placed on the skin for a few minutes to create suction. People will get cupping for many purposes. This includes (not limited to): Pain Management, Inflammation, Improce Blood Flow, Relaxation as well as Health and Wellness purposes.  It can also be used as a type of Deep-Tissue Massage.

The cups may be made of:

  • Glass
  • Bamboo
  • Earthenware
  • Silicon

Cupping therapy may be trendy now, but it’s definitely not new. It dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures.

One of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, describes how the ancient Egyptians used cupping therapy in 1,550 B.C.

Benefits of Cupping

The British Cupping Society says that cupping therapy is used to treat:

  • Blood disorders such as anemia and hemophilia
  • Rheumatic diseases such as arthritis and fibromyalgia
  • Fertility and gynecological disorders
  • Skin problems such as eczema and acne
  • High blood pressure
  • Migraines
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Bronchial congestion caused by allergies and asthma
  • Varicose veins

What does cupping feel like?

Cupping has a unique feeling to it that is very hard to explain (I highly recommend everyone tries it at least once, just so you can experience it). Each different type of cup also has a different feel to it. At Harbor Wellness Centre, we use authentic glass cups, so we will talk about the feeling with a glass cup.

The glass cup creates its suction by having quick heat put under it and then it gets placed on the skin. You don’t feel any heat at all and just feel the suction from the cup. The first cup is then moved around the area being treated which mimics what feels like a massage. After the first cup, you will have all the cups placed on the section being treated. You will then feel the suction all over. As more cups are being placed, the more the suction will get spread out and even out. The cups will then stay in place for however long your treatment calls for. It starts off feeling unusual, but by the end, you are disappointed that the cups are coming off!

Be sure to try it at a registered cupping therapist and try to ensure that it’s as authentic as possible.
